Views of the Altamont Fire

Summer in the Central Valley! You can tell because brush fires are everywhere. Yesterday, there was a 3-alarm brush fire in the Altamont Pass. I-580 was shut down wreaking havoc with the rush hour PM traffic. I was thinking to myself, "Well, good thing I'm taking the train." Umm, nope, even that wasn't an alternative because the tracks were shut down. Well, that didn't give us any choice but to grit our teeth and endure the drive up the hill using the car that we park at the Pleasanton station. But before we hopped on to our car, the train dispatcher announced that the train would be allowed to pass through but running ever sooo slooowly as there were signal problems and track damage from the fire.

So the normal 40-minute train ride from Pleasanton to Tracy stretched out to 1 -1/2 hours. Along the way, though, I snapped these pictures with my handy-dandy camera phone which provided a bit of an excitement to the slow ride. We saw the snarled traffic on I-580 and it was travelling slower than our snail's pace so I was still glad that I was seated in the train and not out there fighting the traffic. Here are some of the scenes that I took of the brush fire in the Altamont Pass.

A huge expanse of the hills burned

Fire burning a little too close to the train tracks

Fire still raging up in the hills

Fire still burning

Smoke everywhere!
